DAY 1: LJUBLJANA/BLED – KRANJSKA GORA
Welcome to the alpine land of Slovenia. This magnificent day will start with a ride around lake Bled, just what we’ll need for a relaxed introduction to our adventure. The path will soon take a turn down the valley of river Radovna and through a canyon of Mežakla and Pokljuka plateaus. Once we reach Mojstrana in the upper Sava valley, we’ll hit the door. The valley of Vrata (eng. door) will welcome us on a ride to the Peričnik waterfalls, a site of crystal clear alpine wates in the direction of Slovenia’s highest mountain, Mt. Triglav. With elevation of 2.864 meters it is the highest peak of Julian Alps, and a symbol seen on the country’s coat-of-arms. Infactuated with the mountain’s mightiness, we’ll continue towards Kranjska Gora, a popular yeat peaceful holiday resort and one of the top spots for skiers. For those who wish to add a cultural element to their trip, there are plenty of interesting sights, such as Slovenian Alpine Museum, a charming Russian chapel from the beginning of the 20th century, and region’s specific alpine architecture. Should you like to take a rest instead, we’ll relax our muscles by and in the pool.
DAY 2: KRANJSKA GORA – BOVEC
That pool was quite a good idea, wasn’t it? Especially since what is ahead of us is an intense up-hill ride while we strive to conquer Slovenia’s highest mountain pass. A winding path will take us up the hills above Kranjska Gora that will impress you with a gorgeous scenery of Julian Alps. But, no time to spare! Soon after ascending this 1611 high thrown of Vršič, we’ll be on an insane drive over to the plateaus’s south side and down to the springs of river Soča.
The emerald colour of river Soča has been praised by everyone who has ever laid their eyes on its beauty. Simon Gregorčič, one of the country’s most prominent poets, wrote a poem about it, saying “You are splendid, limpid daughter of the heights, you are graceful in your natural beauty …” and indeed, this will be a breath-taking sight. We well meet Soča by its mouth, and from there on, it will be our companion on the way to Bovec, where we’ll have a well-deserved rest.
DAY 3: BOVEC
On the third day, we’ll take it slow. Our host, Bovec, is a calm town at an elevation of just a bit more than 400 meters. Know for it’s pleasant climate conditions and surroundings, it is a perfect place for long walks, lying around in the sun or taking a refreshing jump in river Soča. If you are on a hunt for an adrenalin rush, you can always go rafting, zip-lining, climbing, parachuting, or riding around these lively terrains on your bike. And a pinch of trivia, that might give you a sense of what a beautiful site Bovec is: in 2007, when the producers of Narnia were looking for a perfect spot to film the battle in Prince Caspian, they were so impressed by the scenery, that they filmed the movie’s climax in Bovec. And we agree, Bovec and its surroundings are an absolute must-visit.
DAN 4: BOVEC – (STOL) – KOBARID
Back on our bikes and ready for new adventures, we will be following the waterline of river Soča. By the end of the day, we will be introduced to one of the most popular mountain tops to local MTB enthusiasts: Mt. Stol, our most high-flying goal of the day. But, not to worry, we’ll conquer it and we’ll do it in style. If an incredible view from the top won’t be enough, you’ll soon be rewarded again; this time by an insane down-hill ride towards Kobarid, where we shall remember the WWI, the Miracle of Kobarid, and make plans for Day 5 of our journey.
DAN 5: KOBARID – MATAJUR – CHIVIDALE DEL FRIULI
We seem to have planned well, for what is ahead of us is the most spectacular down-hill ride of the week! Our bikes will take us all the way up to the top of Matajur peak which rises 1645 above water level! Surely, we will be exhausted after a long ride on what is not the easiest terrain for cycling, so we will definitely deserve a good meal and some time to relax with a splendid view from the top. And then, the ride will follow. More than an hour of battling mighty rocks and labyrinths of tree-roots, we’ll be riding down, but the adrenalin level will be rising. Once we reach the foot of the mountain, we’ll agree that the tiresome cycling up-hill was worth the effort.
Final destination of the day: Cividale del Friuli, a Unesco World heritage site that has been first inhabited by Veneti and Celts, later on constructed by the people of Roman empire, burnt down and built again … a town of the richest history.
DAY 6: CHIVIDALE DEL FRIULI – ŠMARTNO
After five days of steep slopes and crazy downhills, a more flat grounds will do us well. The Friuli lowlands will take us to the border with Italy, where the terrain will again become slightly hill and diverse. Welcome to Goriška Brda, a fertile land that is home to Slovenia’s best wine producers. Oh, what day that will be. Well, and a fun night. ;)
DAN 7: SABOTIN & BRDA
Waking up in Brda ... tranquility and serenity. The trip is coming to its end and it is fair to say a proper farewell to river Soča, which will once again be our faithful companion on our ride over Sabotin, a walk through WWI battle-tunnels and to the core of Brda, where vintners will show us their know-how, and what is most important, their products. A tasty finish of our journey.
DAN 8: TRANSFER NA BLED/LJUBLJANA
