Idrija is the oldest, trapped between the mountains, mining city in Slovenia, which has a reputation in the world carried by the mercury mine. The second largest mercury mine in the world helped Idrija to flourish in all fields from art and science to commerce and culture. Today, the entire old town is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Former mining castle Gewerkenegg, which dates in the beginning of the 16th century, still oversees attractive place surrounded by clean water, vast forests and scenic plateau.
Idrija invites you to discover its rich cultural and technical heritage of world importance, learn about the tradition of lace-making Idrija lace, breathe the unspoiled nature and taste traditional delicacies in the surrounding villages. In any event, we must not forget Idrija žlikrofi that are gourmet and specialty and are just right conclusion of this wonderful trip.
