Trip Details

It may not seem obvious at first, but wine and cycling have a lot in common; both are done best when there is diversity in terrains. On this trip, we will cycle around and through not one, but three different wine-growing regions. Get ready for a week of somewhat challenging up-hill rides and adrenalin-pumping downhills in pleasant climate conditions, some of most spectacular views from the hill-tops, as well as moments of leisure and gastronomical delights with the local people, who are as unique as their environment.

In the morning – not too early, of course – we will gather in Goriška Brda. Lovely landscapes and animated terrains will give us a hint of the wonderfulness that is to be expected on this trip. A week of cycing throughout one of the most fertile wine-lands in the region? It doesn’t get much better than that.

A short bicycle ride over the hills, getting to know the area, and we will soon be face-to-face with the lovely local people in one of the wine cellars, where we’ll have a chance to try their specialties. Not to be missed at any cost!

Brda on one side, river Soča on the other, and in the middle: Sabotin. Some of you might know this place for being one of the most ferocious fronts during the WWI. Luckily, it has recuperated from its past and is nowadays a popular hiking destination. Soon, we will be leaving the glorious panorama views of Brda, crossing river Soča and heading towards Karst.

Karst: a land of teran (terrano) and prosciutto. A combination of the sun and wind-swept scapes provides this area with a specific character, colourful and vigorous disposition, that can also be observed in the people, who inhabit it. Just like their homeland, they are intriguing and full of life. Honestly, there are not enough words to describe their souls, so you simply have to meet them. And you will.

This will be the day when we cross a big chunk of Karst length-wise. We’ll take a ride down-hill to remote and tranquile parts of the region, and enjoy peacefulness of the natural environment. Versatile terrain of the area will add some fun to our ride around vivid landscapes and towards one of the most striking villages in Karst. Named after its patron, saint Daniel, Štanjel has its origins in prehistoric times. In the past, Štanjel serves as an important strategic point. Today, the magnificent stone walls keep inhabitants of the village safe from the strong hits of wind Bora. Behind the walls there is an idyllic scenery, where many couples find a perfect venue for their wedding. Also, it is in Štanjel where some of the best culinary specialties of Karst are served.

On the fourth day, we’ll dig deep into the area’s lively terrain. A ride among numerous unique natural phenomena will lead us to marvellous settlements, where many of Slovenia’s most prominent artists were born. With the local people being very friendly, don’t be surprised if some of them invite us into their homesteads for a glass of wine or a snack. As we have already mentioned, this is a not only a land of beautiful sights, but also a home to hospitable people. Next stop: Sežana.

Sežana will serve as a great starting point on our way to Lipica, where we’ll observe Lipizzaners, an autochtonous horse breed. A chance to take a look at the studfarm from the inside, and soon we’ll be on our way towards the national border, more precicely, to Bazovica, where we’ll take a break. In a less fun, yet very realistic manner, we’ll be introduced to foibe, where many of the WWII horrors took place. Followed by a glance at the Trieste Gulf, we’ll continue down-hill to the valley of Glinščica. Just a bit more of pedal-pushing and we will wrap up for the day by stopping in Kozina.

A good-morning ride to the nearby hill and a chance to observe Koper and the Trieste Gulf with our eyes wide open. In case you’re still sleepy, w’ll take care of that by taking you on a fun down-hill ride from Slavnik, one of the highest peaks in Istria, down to Socerb.

Socerb, a small settlement on the edge of Karst region, is most famous for its castle. Rather modest in appearance, it was of extreme importance in medieval times for its strategic position. We will continue cycling to Osp and enjoy the ride on a more narrow path that goes along the river Rižana all the way to Koper. A night by the sea will be perfect for a slow walk to Piran or Portorož.

Welcome to Dragonja, the last of those three wine-lands we promised you. After breakfast in koper, we will ride across blossoming vineyards, be it on the hilly paths or along the sea coast. In both cases, this will be a day of divinity, provided by the magical ambience. Far from all the urban noisiness, you’ll have a chance to get to know your co-travellers a little better and share your impressions on what we’ve seen so far.

Good morning and see you soon, Koper! It is the last day of our trip and we hope you’ll remember it for a long long time.
